Q: When you step out of your USUAL genre what do you like to read? Best books in that genre?I'm normally a paranormal/urban fantasy reader, but when I do step out of that genre, I tend to go for the general/contemporary YA books. I'm literally glancing back and forth between my laptop and my bookshelves right now, and I'm noticing quite a lot of books about suicide, depression, self-harm and recovery... things like that. I'm not quite sure why; it's not like I have those kinds of tendencies. I don't think that just because one reads about a particular subject a lot, it automatically means they go through the same things. Some do, some don't (although I'm sure a lot of us would love to experience what it's like to be demon-hunters and/or have hot vampire boys fall for us or something). In my case, it's the character's journey that draws me in. I've never been depressed or strongly contemplated suicide, though when I was a teen and even now, I have moments of vulnerability that makes me think of the occasional "what if". But I value my life and those close to me too much. Still, these stories are real for some people out there, and I've heard of instances where these books have helped them through tough times or helped other people understand these situations more, especially if they know someone who is going through it. What's not to like about that kind of personal connection? Here are some of my favourites:
Impulse by Ellen Hopkins
It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
I hope everyone has a great weekend. If you're a new follower, please let me know and I'll follow back!
I mostly read young adult too! I very much agree with your statement on the suicide. Love your header!

It's funny that we don't really realize the types of books we have on our shelves until we sit down and pay attention to them. There was a period in my life where the majority of my books were romance. Was I a hopeless romantic? Probably, but I would not define myself with the types of books I had. My books are constantly changing as I become more "wiser."

I have a LOT of books about the topics you mentioned in your post and the book 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' is one of my favorites. I actually just posted a review on it.
Awesome answer and I can't wait to read more of you.

Btw I'm sending you an e-mail with a question.
Interesting picks! They are not books that I would usually read, but I should try one to experiment with the genre! Thank you for stopping by my blog and I'm now a new follower through GFC!
All those books are new to me. I will have to check them out.
Thanks for stopping by.
Old follower returning visit. I'm not a big fan of contemporary and my shelves reflect that.
I have never seen any of the books listed here before. I love your post! Thanks for sharing new book ideas with me!

Thanks for stopping by - happy to return the follow. I don't tend to read a lot of contemporary fiction . . . I like to escape for that when I sit down to read. :)

Loveee your header! It's so pretty and unique! And I agree with you on that, I'm a avid paranormal reader and stepping out of my genre would be contemporary novels. Thanks for stopping by. Old follower. :)
